Diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), the only treatment that offered her relief was high-dose ketamine therapy. However, when her family sought emergency care, the hospital staff—unfamiliar with the rare condition—accused her mother, Beata, of child abuse (specifically Munchausen syndrome by proxy). Maya was state-sequestered, and after being forcibly separated from her daughter for 87 days, a devastated Beata tragically died by suicide. A subsequent 2019 investigation exposed a systemic, deeply disturbing pattern of similar cases involving the state's child protection services and medical authorities.
